Western Intercollegiate Round 1 Suspended Due To Darkness
SANTA CRUZ, Calif., April 12, 2022 - The first round of the 75th Western Intercollegiate presented by Topgolf and Titleist was suspended due to darkness Monday with three groups still on the course. The opening round was played in rainy and blistery conditions throughout the day at the Pasatiempo Golf Club.
The final three groups will finish their final hole, No. 18, prior to the start of their second round.
Eighth-ranked Pepperdine leads the team standings at 18-over par with all six golfers still on the course. Ninth-ranked Texas holds the clubhouse lead at 21-over 371 followed by sixth-ranked Washington (373), California (374), and host San José State (376).
Individually, four golfers are tied for the lead at even par 70.
Competing in the second group of the day, San José State’s Nick Watts posted 70 for the clubhouse lead. The freshman, who is also competing as an individual, shot even par on both nines and saw his round hold up the rest of the day as conditions worsened.
Pierceson Coody of Texas, the 13th-ranked golfer nationally, also shot 70. He made the turn at 3-under par after an eagle on the par-5, No. 9 before going bogey, double, bogey over his next three holes. He finished his final six holes in 1-under par.
Colorado State’s Rasmus Hjelm also carded even par with a round that included four birdies and four bogeys. The sophomore was 1-under through 12 before finishing +1 over his final six holes.
Pepperdine’s Dylan Menante is also even par through 17 holes. Seven other golfers are two strokes off the lead. Defending champion Joe Highsmith of Pepperdine is 3-over with one hole to play.
